Streaming data usage calculator
Estimate streaming data use from bitrate, viewing time and simultaneous streams. Change every assumption.
Estimated streaming data for your chosen period, in decimal GB.
Your inputs stay in this browser. Nothing is uploaded or saved in an account.
Start with bitrate, not a quality label.
Resolution alone does not determine data use. The codec, programme, frame rate and service settings all affect average bitrate. This calculator holds your entered bitrate constant so that the arithmetic is visible.
With allowance = GB × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
At 4 Mbps, one hour is 1.8 decimal GB. Two streams running for two hours each day over 30 days use an estimated 216 GB before any extra allowance. One stream at the same settings uses 108 GB.
Leave room for everything else.
Software updates, games, video calls, cloud backups and other devices use data too. The remaining figure subtracts this streaming estimate from your entered cap; it is not a live reading of your account. If it is negative, the estimate alone exceeds that allowance.
Adaptive streaming changes bitrate. Provider estimates described as “up to” are not minimums or guarantees. Use a few days of router or provider usage records to check the scale of your estimate. Do not assume that the connection’s maximum Mbps is the stream’s actual average Mbps.
A few useful answers
Is this a speed test or usage monitor?
No. It calculates from the numbers you enter and does not contact your internet provider or measure traffic.
Does 4K always use the same amount?
No. Different codecs, services, settings and scenes can have different average bitrates. Use the average that fits the service and device you actually use.
Are GB and GiB interchangeable here?
No. This tool reports decimal GB, using 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Check how your provider defines its data allowance.
