Storage unit converter

Convert bytes, decimal GB and TB, and binary GiB and TiB without mixing the two systems.

One amount. Both systems.

Drive packaging commonly uses decimal units. Some operating systems show binary quantities using a different label.

Your inputs stay in this browser. Nothing is uploaded or saved in an account.

The unit changes. Your files do not.

Decimal prefixes multiply by 1,000. Binary prefixes multiply by 1,024. One GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; one GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. The converter first expresses your input as bytes, then divides by each unit’s factor.

Output amount = input amount × input bytes per unit ÷ output bytes per unit

For example, 1 TB is 1,000 GB, or approximately 931.323 GiB. That conversion alone is not evidence of missing storage. Partitions, formatting and recovery areas can affect usable space separately.

Read the label as well as the number.

This tool converts storage quantities, not transfer rates. A lowercase b normally means bits; this table uses bytes. Fractional bytes are allowed for mathematical conversions, but an actual file’s stored size is a whole number of bytes. Rounded displayed values are estimates; calculations are limited to JavaScript’s safe byte-count range.

Why a 1 TB drive can appear as roughly 931 GB · Calculate a transfer time instead.

A few useful answers

Is GB the same as GiB?

No. GB uses powers of 1,000 and GiB uses powers of 1,024. One GiB holds more bytes than one GB.

Does converting change or format a drive?

No. This is arithmetic only. It does not read a drive, change files or perform formatting.

Why do the last digits differ from another calculator?

Display rounding and very large floating-point calculations can differ. Use the full byte count when an exact whole-file comparison matters.
